Arboretum in Amance
The Fête de la Nature was organized last week end. It was the opportunity to go to the arboretum of Amance. It was a first visit for us.
This place was created in 1901. At the beginning there were 230 species of trees, nowadays there are 400. They are planted in four different parts (East America, West America, Asia and Europe).
We walked around in the two American parts and in the European one, and we only saw a few Asian trees. We were given a paper at the beginning of the tour where we could see pictures of some trees to recognize them. 11 pictures in the European part, but only 9 names. We had to find the two missing, and same game in the American parts. There was a board near the trees and we had to find the solution by checking bark, leaves... There was also a game with barks, pictures on a paper to link with pieces of trunks with numbers put in a small area. It was pleasant to learn something by playing.
What can I say about all these trees ? We enjoyed recognizing the ones we already knew (oak, silver birch, beech, hornbeam, ...). We discovered American species. The Sitka spruce is really prickly ! The tulip tree was blooming, And sequoias (picture) were impressing. Everybody was interested in maple trees.
People were present to answer our questions and help us to find answers to the games. They explained about difficulties to keep the arboretum in a good state, about trees that died in 1999 (the big storm) and 2003 (drought), about the studies and the new trees they would like to plant. It was definitely a good visit.
