The lake of Longemer from the Hautes-Vosges

The lake of Longemer from the Hautes-Vosges

Last week we went to the Hautes-Vosges, the highest part of the Vosges mountains. We chose to go to La Schlucht first. It was a bit misty when we arrived there and we went on higher in the mountains.

We stopped on a parking place where we met tourists from the north of France and one English couple. The woman told me the weather was "very changeable". And it was indeed.

But we managed to see the lake of Longemer from the small picnic area up there. The lake is known because of its camping places but first of all because it is a very good place to go fishing. Competitions are organized around the lake. It is situated between the lake of Retournemer and the lake of Gérardmer. The three are in la Vallée des Lacs (the Valley of the Lakes).

A trip to the lakes is always pleasant and there is always something to see or discover, but I think they are even more beautiful from the tops (when mist doesn't decide to come and hide everything). I would watch them for hours. Last time was interesting as the mist was coming and going and the view was changing nearly every minute.

We then decided to go higher again and had a twenty-minute trip in thick fog, followed by five bikers who found our car lights very useful. We stopped at Le Markstein and I realized I understood why shops sell plain grey postcards saying "View from the tops" ! It is not only a joke, it can be reality !

Such a beautiful picture, reminds me of waking in the middle of a dream and realizing you have seen Paradise.

Going to the Vosges mountains is always relaxing, even if there is fog on the way.
