Lutzelbourg castle in Moselle
If you don't want to drive on big roads coming back from Alsace, you can choose to go through a small valley, the Zorn valley. There are plenty of trees on each side, a typical view of the north of the Vosges mountains.
As we were there at the end of August, we saw a sign indicating Château de Lutzelbourg. We didn't know there was a castle in Lutzelbourg. It stands out of the village, on top of a rock but we didn't see it when we arrived in the valley. I think we didn't have a look up, just enjoying the view of houses, gardens and flowers.
We were surprised to find quite a big castle. Part of it has been restored, it now belongs to the village. It was built in the 10th century by a noble family and then was given or sold to other families or abbeys till the French Revolution. A few private owners tried to protect it during the 19th and 20th centuries before the village got it and started a project to rebuild the walls. Even if there are still ruins mainly, it is still impressing.
There is a goat farm nearby and we were interested too but it was quite late, so we decided we'll go to Lutzelbourg another time and have a better visit of the village, the castle and the farm.
